Driver Education FAQ
The classroom portion consists of ten three-hour classes. There is a 15-minute break in each class session, which brings the total time per class to 3 hours and 15 minutes.
The behind-the-wheel portion consists of three two-hour graded lessons.
Driver Education has a capacity of 18 students; Driver Education with Additional Support has a capacity of 12 students.

Yes, all new drivers regardless of age are required to complete and pass an MVA-certified Driver Education class and comply with the Rookie Driver laws and requirements.
No. When a student completes and passes both the classroom and behind-the-wheel portions of Driver Education, their information is submitted electronically to the MVA. Please allow up to 72 hours for the submission to be reflected in the MVA system.

If the college is closed, there are no classes or driving lessons. If the college is open, it is up to the discretion of your instructor whether or not to conduct behind-the-wheel lessons.
Yes, students must have a Maryland Learner's permit to take Driver Education. For more information regarding obtaining a Learner's Permit, please visit the page at the MVA.
We offer Learner's Permit Prep (SFT122) for those who would like help preparing for the learner's permit test. This course is open for everyone but is designed by a special educator to help students who require additional support. Please call 240-567-1895 for more information.
Students under 18 need to bring a mentor (parent, guardian, etc.), and all students need to bring their learner's permit to the first class/orientation session.
Students may miss up to 3 classes, but they must make those classes up later in another CRN. To make up the particular session(s) you missed, please contact the program assistant.
If you miss more than 3 classroom sessions, you must re-register and re-take Driver Education at a later date.
*Notice: Starting Summer 2023, all Driver Education students must attend the first class. Makeups will not be allowed for the first class. If a student misses the first class, then they have to re-start the course at a later date.
BTW Guidelines (PDF, ) are provided as a reference guide for students participating in our Driver Education program; this includes guidelines regarding appropriate attire, what you should do if you have to cancel or reschedule a lesson, and where to meet for lessons. Students must sign this document before they are allowed to schedule their behind-the-wheel lessons."
For the safety of the students, instructors, fellow motorists, and pedestrians, students must agree to the terms and conditions of the Vehicle Training Safety Agreement (PDF, ) prior to the first behind-the-wheel lesson. This form must be signed by the student, as well as the student's parent/guardian if they are under 18.
When: Behind-the-wheel lessons can be taken at the same time as the classroom portion and/or after the classroom portion is completed; it is the responsibility of the student to contact their instructor to schedule their lessons. We strongly recommend that students have prior driving experience and are familiar with car controls and basic maneuvering.
Where: All behind-the-wheel lessons start and end at Rockville Campus.
If your lesson is more than 24 hours away, please contact your instructor as soon as possible. If your lesson is less than 24 hours away, please still let your instructor know, but also be aware that you will have to pay a $50 fee due to the late notice.
In our fleet, we have 2 sedans as well as 2 SUVs. All of our cars have automatic transmissions.
Students must pass both the final classroom exam and the final behind-the-wheel lesson with scores of 80% or higher in order for their completion information to be submitted to the MVA.
If a student fails the final classroom exam, they have 2 chances to retake the exam at no extra charge. If they fail the 2 retakes as well, then they must re-register and retake the entire Driver Education course.
If a student fails the behind the wheel portion, they must practice and then arrange with the school to re-take the failed lesson. Any lesson outside of the 6 hours included in the course is at an additional charge.
Our instructors are all licensed by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration and have a wealth of experience and knowledge about driving safety. They have been teaching Driver Education for several years in the local community and have previously served as police officers, military officers, and high school teachers. To maintain their certification, they participate in state-required continuing education as well as professional development opportunities at 海角禁区. Our small group of instructors embrace the program's commitment to quality driver education.
Important information about Driver Education courses:
All behind-the-wheel lessons start and end at Rockville Campus, no exceptions. Please meet your instructor on time for lessons. During behind-the-wheel instruction, Montgomery College reserves the right to stop the behind the wheel lesson if any student demonstrates safety concerns. At this point, the student may be referred to screening to determine driver readiness.
Please be advised that while Driver Education schools are accomplished at making judgement and sharing insight on driver skills, none are authorized to make a determination or prognosis on whether a rookie driver can or cannot drive on Maryland roads. The responsibility lies with the parent/guardian and the state of Maryland on whether this student should share Maryland roads.
Participation in our Driver Education program is open to all students. However, students with conditions identified by COMAR 11.17.03.02-1 "Reportable Medical Conditions"?must be reported to the MVA and Medical Advisory Board as instructed.
